Cause When My Head Tells Me No, My Heart Tells Me Go

What I wore yesterday in a little town in Southern Italy.

LOVE LOVE LOVE my new overalls!!!!

Still mastering the whole getting the straps to the right length thing so don’t have a weird pouch.  But the short overall trend is huge this summer (saw two other girls wearing them yesterday) and this chambray color and the polka dot print are so my style!  It’s really important when trying a trend to find a version of it that is “you”–if you can’t, it’s not the trend for you.  You should always wear what you like–not only because that’s how you feel best, but you also won’t look like you’re trying too hard to be trendy.  Find the “it” item in a print or color you love and/or a style that really flatters your body (it takes some searching but it’s worth it!), and find trendy pieces that go with your favorites in your wardrobe.  And, of course, don’t wear a trend unless you actually like it!

Knew I wanted to pair these overalls with a great white tee and some cool layered necklaces.  I love the effortless feel of the lariat style of the shorter one, which I got as a gift years ago, and the white faux-pearls in the longer one echo the white dots of the shortalls (I also chose round faux pearl earrings).  Echoing the shapes in the prints you’re wearing with your jewelry is a great, and often overlooked, way to look more pulled together.  When wearing polka dots I like to choose round earrings or jewelry with round beads or charms, and with more geometric prints I choose jewelry with more stark, straight, clean lines.

Have had these sandals forever (since like sophomore year of high school) and they’re great.  They’ve got a tiny little mini wedge, are such a light purple that they go with everything while still being a nod to my favorite color, and are comfortable and generally adorable.

Also obsessed with this bascially perfect brown crossbody I got recently.  It’s a larger version of a bag I have in yellow, and it is so easy for all summer outfits.  I love the rich yet versatile color, the crossbody strap, the zipper detail, and the turnlock closure.  Was super affordable but looks luxe.

What I wore yesterday:

  • Rue 21 overalls
  • Halogen tee from Nordstrom
  • Express sandals
  • Betsey Johnson fedora
  • Tiffany and Co. short necklace, a gift from a friend
  • Linda Levinson Designs long necklace, a gift from my cousin
  • bracelet and earrings I took from my mom
  • Street Level bag from Francesca’s Collections
  • Marc by Marc Jacobs sunglasses

Hope you all are enjoying summer so far! ❤

You Can Have Your Dream But You Can’t Have Me

Fun spring outfit I wore yesterday!  I knew I wanted to pair my new favorite Charlotte Olympia flats with my polka dot cropped pants (with fun shoes, a white top and a jean jacket, these pants make a no-fail outfit).  This subtly-acid washed jean jacket, although I haven’t featured it on my blog yet, is a staple for me.  I throw it on with shorts and dresses all summer.

I love this new top my mom got me at H&M!  You can’t tell from the picture but it’s jersey with chiffon-y cap sleeves and pleats at the front, plus a little rhinestone!  So cute and I will wear it all the time.

Of course, my blue Aldo bag that I love.  You can’t see them here, but I’m also rocking a cute set of colored rhinestone bracelets.

What I wore yesterday:

  • Merona pants from Target (came with belt)
  • H&M top
  • Charlotte Olympia flats
  • Heritage 1981 jean jacket from Forever 21
  • Aldo bag
  • Banana Republic Factory Store earrings
  • Express bracelets

Post title from the song Not the Boy Next Door, from the musical The Boy From Oz, but I learned it when Kurt performed it as his audition song on Glee.  Amazing.

Have fun with your wardrobe this spring, all!

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Appropriately, I’m in love with my outfit.

As I’ve said before, this is my go-to dress.  So flattering, so girly, so great worn with simple accessories, mismatched with other prints, or edged up with a moto jacket and booties.  And this shirt is going to become a staple, I think.  I just got it last Friday and this is already the second time I’ve worn it (first time was half-tucked into black jeans with a belt and hoop earrings).  I’ve even got another outfit idea in mind for it that you’ll be seeing next week (it’ll be a red-letter day–the first time this blogger really goes for denim on denim).  What I love about this shirt is that it’s a basic chambray shirt with a twist, the adorable polka dots.  I think that the fact that it does have a simple print actually inspires me to wear it with more, instead of limiting me.  It’s interesting enough to make an outfit–this look wouldn’t have the eclectic, quirky vibe if the shirt were plain chambray (and no way would I do the denim on denim dare to come).

In many of my outfits, I perfectly coordinate accessories and pieces.  But some of my favorite looks are when I mismatch things, and find that settling for matches that seem less than perfect actually yields effortless perfection.  It’s kind of like the lyric I chose for the title today–sometimes in style, one and one make three.

This lyric is from Bruce Springsteen’s new song “Frankie Fell in Love,” which I am completely obsessed with.  The lyrical genius cannot even been described, and the music pumps you up.  I chose this lyric today because it’s about love, and then I realized it also applies to fashion.  Anyway, check out the song for some serious fun.

For Valentine’s Day wearing a little heart necklace ($1.80 at Forever 21!)

Also, as my Valentine to myself, eating a lot of chocolate today and CARRYING THIS NEW BAG THAT I AM RIDICULOUSLY OBSESSED WITH.  I love Aldo bags–they are so affordable and such good quality, not to mention unique and fun and fabulous.  Couldn’t resist this one when I went shopping with my mom last weekend.  Between the color, the structure, the texture…I’m just in love. ❤

What I’m wearing today:

  • Forever 21 dress, necklace, and bracelet
  • LOFT shirt
  • Earrings from Macy’s
  • Aldo bag
  • Hue tights
  • Charlotte Russe boots

Hope you all had a lovely Valentine’s Day!

We Came To Live Life Like Nobody Was Watching

Monday’s look.  I felt so pretty!

I am so proud of this blazer/dress combo.  This is a great example of how to mix prints (though you may have heard all this before): Large scale with small, similar colors, yadda yadda yadda.  I think this combo works especially well because the color of the dress is an accent color in the jacket, making it pulled-together but not matchy-matchy.

I used accessories to pull out other colors in the jacket:  My favorite seahorse necklace to pull out the mint and my old go-to green Aldo bag to highlight the darker greens.

This jacket is a new fave.  It’s Rag & Bone and I got such a fantastic deal on it–I found it for half price at a T.J. MAXX Runway store (the Runway stores are special, they have more high designer pieces–from Tory Burch skirts to Moschino cardigans to Alice and Olivia jackets to PS1 wallets.  I even saw a Valentino dress there last time!), and then I used a store credit to cut THAT price in half.  Gotta love it.  It fits amazingly and the colors freshen a classic floral print.  I spent a good many hours on Sunday reading the latest issue of Glamour, and there was a fantastic feature on Marcus Wainwright and David Neville of Rag & Bone and their families.  They’ve each got three kids and seem like really nice guys.  Reading about the brand’s conception and heritage made me even more excited to rock this jacket the next day (and y’all have seen my amazing Rag & Bone BF jeans).

Speaking of the new issue of Glamour, I really suggest picking it up.  It’s the 75th anniversary issue and it’s full of fantastic articles.  Literally every time I turned the page there was another AMAZING story.  Just to name a few:

  • Interview and shoot with cover girl Taylor Swift
  • A list of the top 75 women of the past 75 years, including a timeline of Glamour covers
  • A beauty shoot and interview with new it-girl Lupita Nyongo
  • A piece by Jimmy Fallon on his new show and new baby
  • A shoot of Allison Williams looking gorgeous in fantastic metallics
  • A laugh-out-loud article describing a woman’s attempts to go one whole week without griping
  • Just in time for Valentine’s Day, a collection of stories of women remembering their relationship “firsts”

Anywho, that made my Sunday all the brighter.

What I’m wearing:

  • Ultra Flirt dress from Macy’s (also a great deal–I think it was like $17)
  • Rag & Bone blazer from T.J. MAXX Runway
  • MANGO necklace
  • Bracelets from Nordstrom (I think they’re Anne Klein?)
  • Betsey Johnson earrings
  • Aldo bag
  • Anne Taylor tights
  • Madden Girl boots

Have a great week, I’ll have a romantic Valentine’s outfit for you Friday!
